Introduction

John Rigby (9 December 1922 – 18 October 2012) was a long-established Australian artist whose career spanned some seven decades.

During this time he had a career in commercial art, served as a Trustee of the Queensland Art Gallery for 18 years from 1969 to 1987, and taught and administered at the Queensland College of Art (now part of Griffith University) from 1973 to 1984.

He continued to travel and paint both in Australia and overseas until late in life. His paintings of tropical Queensland, the Outback of Australia and the South Pacific have been appreciated for many decades. A book on his art and life was published in late 2003 and is available from the Queensland Art Gallery/Gallery of Modern Art bookshops.
