Rigby’s modus operandi on site was working directly in front of the motif. He was perplexed that he was widely regarded as primarily a landscape artist. Many of his major awards are for portraits and genre paintings, drawing inspiration from a wide range of sources.
His work covers portraits, figures, still lifes, cityscapes, land and seascapes, floral motifs and even abstraction. Australian audiences historically expected a certain look. By contrast, Rigby’s ‘style’ has varied and is interwoven with the socio-cultural history of South East Queensland.

A Retrospective of John Rigby’s Art
Stradbroke Island, Coolum and Noosa, Tasmania, the Whitsundays and back again to Stradbroke Island for a last visit in 2009. We shared a love of these places, an understanding of the joy these places could bring. Walking into National parks, seeing scenes recreated through his eyes, washing the brushes at the end of day. These times and places now forever remembered in these works of Art. Renée (artist’s daughter)
